Matthew Krause

First of all I want to thank you for visiting my website! My goal as an artist is to create something people have never seen before. Cardboard Creations was started by a idea to make a pixelated topographic map of Wisconsin of losing cardboard pull tab images collected from local Wisconsin establishments. As these places keep collecting, I decided to create custom signs for the bars who supported my idea….and I haven’t stopped.

It all starts with having a beer. I collect ‘dead’ (losing) pull tabs from local bars in Sheboygan. I then go through them and cut out the unique images individually. The design process starts with the smallest image to make details and scaling up from there. Once a design is defined I pick out the pull tab images associated with the colors of the full image. Each square is then individually glued to the board that will be hung on the wall with a custom frame.

I live in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Other media that I play under the MK Designs label is with include puzzles, pipe light fixtures, and epoxy resin. I also enjoy reading, board games, video games and puzzles.

A special thanks to my dog Ava who was always supported me in the early stages of my journey…as long as she had a bone to play with.

What is a Cardboard Creation anyway?

Pull tabs are gambling tickets made from cardboard and are a staple in Wisconsin bars and restaurants. Local establishments collect the losing tickets for my custom pixel art.

1: Collect

The first step in any piece is gathering the supplies.

2: Cut

Cutting the individual images which will be used for the pixels.

3: Design

The design is converted into pixels with color relating to cut images.

4: Glue

Time to start gluing those individual pixels.

5: Hang

Purchased pieces are custom framed.

All children are artists. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.
